Seldovia - 2024
More than a month ago (mid-October), my sister, Lael, and I went on a missions trip with Child Evangelism Fellowship to Seldovia, Alaska. Seldovia, a small town across Katchemak Bay from Homer, is not connected to the road system. You can only get there by boat or plane (or hiking for a few days, I guess ๐).
We took a water taxi from Homer to get to Seldovia. It was around a forty-minute trip, and we had a bumpy ride because it was a little windy. On the way back, the water was smooth, so we were able to sit outside.
While we were there, we put on a three-day Good News Club for the local kids at Seldovia Bible Chapel. The church there uses our three-day event as an opportunity to invite the kids to attend their after-school kids club.
During a small group time, Pastor Ben (one of the guys on our team) led one of the kids to Christ! Our team leaders said that last year that particular kid had asked a lot of good questions. Oftentimes, it takes a while for a seed to take root.
Our team also participated in two Teen Nights. Good News Club is for elementary-aged kids, so in the evening, all the teens in town were invited to the church for dinner and games. My favorite part of Teen Night was getting to show everyone the comet, Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. (Try to pronounce that!)
The comet was very hard to find, but with binoculars and some guidance, everyone was able to get a look at it. For most of them, it was the first comet they had ever seen in person.
In our free time, we explored Seldoviaโs beautiful coastal scenery. There were tons of otters, hermit crabs, and jellyfish.
Weโre thankful for the opportunity to serve in Seldovia, and for the people who took care of us while we were there. Now that itโs over, we can pray that the seeds we planted will continue to bear fruit.
