Preparing for Bible Camp - 2021
“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:10
It’s time for Bible Camp in Alaska!
In preparation for the coming camp season, we have been vigorously preparing over the past couple months. Here is an overview of the last eight weeks:
Aircraft Maintenance
Completed maintenance items on the aircraft include: a new propeller cable, manifold pressure sensor, and three exhaust gas temperature sensors.
Maiden Flight
The maiden flight this year went well. The engine performed flawlessly, but we found a few cockpit indication issues. After the flight, we resolved a flight track indication issue with RS232 communication, reconfigured the engine monitor fault annunciator, and fixed connection on two exhaust gas temperature sensors.
Instrument Proficiency Check
Jeff is thankful to complete some approaches (guided landing routes) with Jason who is a CFII (Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument) and renewed his IPC. Jason is also going to volunteer as a missionary pilot to rotate with Jeff for some of Kokrine Hills’ flights this summer.
Ferrying Kako’s Cherokee
Jeff was able to ferry Kako’s newest plane this past week. He is familiar with a Cherokee Six, so it was great that he could accompany the Kako camp director, Jonathan Penz, as they flew the plane 400 miles to Kako (near Russian Mission) from Anchorage through the impressive mountains of the Alaska Range. It’s the same range of mountains that includes Denali (Mt McKinley).
Kako Cherokee Plane Maintenance
The trip to Kako took three days instead of two because we had to address some maintenance items. The throttle cable needed lubricated, the fuel tanks needed flushed, and the landing gear struts needed charged. It was also a little more difficult due to the limited tool options at camp.
Kako Runway Training
Kako is a new runway for Jeff, so he was being trained on their local procedures. The approach path often has a lot of wind shear due to the surrounding mountains. In addition, the runway turns halfway and is still muddy on the lower half because eight feet of snow was plowed off of it. Jeff is planning to fly for their family camp next week.
